1942 9 26 Letter from Kay to Tom

Kay describes leaving Tanforan: Travelling by train: sleeping on seat pulled together "with feet going both ways" since they weren't allowed to "pull down upper berths." Not permitted to leave train at all, only visit between trains at designated hours. She describes leaving Tanforan at night as sad and depressing: "passing rows of horse-stalls we called home for those months and seeing the crowds still standing there in the dusk and on the barrack tops waving goodbye to us." Kay describes Topaz. She describes the facilities as being the "most modern equipped of all the camps" with shower rooms, latrines, hot water etc. The new cook served chicken for two days straight. "Chiz just poked her head in and said 'just like living in the tenement district.'" Freight baggage arrived. Kay will send Tommy's things to him tomorrow.
