ますますご壮健にて良き年を迎えられご活躍のこと拝察いたしております。昨年末には亜国よりの帰途、ご多忙中を数々の御高配をたまわり得難い思い出を得ることが出来ましたことを厚く御礼申し上げます。おかげさまにて二十一日朝無事帰国いたしましたが、今日までお便りが遅れ、おわびのもうしあげもありません。
酷寒の折から、切に御自愛を祈り致します。

Kawakami, Kenzo (the kanji for “Zo” is not clear and it can be some other character thus the first name may be of different pronunciation).

Please allow me to present you my best wishes for the celebration of a Bright and Happy New Year in perfect health.
I truly offer you my sincere appreciation for many wonderful and unforgettful experiences at the end of last year, despite your busy schedule, on my way from the United States [to Japan]. I safely returned to Japan in the morning of 21st and, please accept my apology for a long silence, as I was unable to send you a letter until now.
At the season of the benumbing cold, I pray for your good health.
This is a quick note to express my gratitude.

The words used in the letter are extremely formal, respectful, and quite traditional, so I tried to reflect the nuances of such formalities and Mr. Kawakami’s true sincerity towards Mr. Yamashita.
The date is a bit strange. The card is dated on January 15th, but the letter said that he arrived on 21st. Mr. Kawamura indicated that he had a wonderful and memorable experience “at the end of last year” and then returned to Japan, meaning that it must have been December 21st or even November 21st.
Lastly, Ishikawajima Heavy Industries Corporation (IHI Corporation) is one of Japan’s largest industrial sectors, historically known for the production of ships and tankers (including many battle ships during WWII – then later producing oil tankers, etc).
