There is a lot of subtext in this letter: John handwrites on the back to Kay: "Kay, This is what I was tempted to write: It appears my younger sister has inferred to you that I did not choose to go to Garrett. ON the contrary I have made final and definitive plans to attend there. It was only in the case of non-clearance that I had alternatives in mind. If Garrett is cleared can you kindly take necessary steps to obtain for me a travel permit. Thanking you etc. But I wrote (over)"
