1943 3 6 Letter from Kay to John
Description
Page 1-2
Iyo's marriage to Min. Neech (Susumo) helped out at wedding. The youth of the Intercollegiate Group have become cynical, bitter, apathetic. Product of the Army registration: the question is always "to fight for what?"
Page 3
Kay talks about Interest Groups: Who Went Where (relocated students), Read and Share("Negro" situation in South), World Today (legislation affecting JA's). 36 who applied for repatriation/ expressed desire to go to Japan were sent to Arkansas. About 500 applied for expatriation/repatriation, some in order to avoid draft.
Page 4
Kay fears reaction of embittered Americans against JA's. Beatings of pro-Americans by the Terminal Island and Salina group. 57 students have been relocated to schools.
Page 5
Kay thinks rural people who "cling to things of the old country" are less likely to assimilate, relocate. Churches fund students' education. JA student complains about JA's grouping together, because it is conspicuous and sends "American" students away. St Louis won't take anymore JA's.
Page 6
Kay is proud of upcoming students applying for relocation. She waits for NSRD to reply regarding scholarships. A man from the WRA in Chicago came to visit. Kay despised him, as he is a former WPA worker. Job opportunities are slim.
