Iyo's Wedding

Iyo and Min Tamaki married on February 27, 1943.

Letter from Kay to John. March 6, 1943.
Kay wrote to Tom on on Jan 12, 1943 updating him in Nebraska at school about the goings on in camp. She wrote about the Christmas festivities, how her hakujin (white) friends sent her gifts and she was surprised by their generosity. She also updated him about hearing the newest anti-Japanese American sentiment. Kay read in the San Francisco Examiner "that certain Senators are trying to get these Camps under Army control again- if they succeed we're sunk." She also gave the updates about the family- namely that Iyo was going steady with Min Tamaki, "the fellow Leah Tokunaga was going around with at Tanforan…I'm hoping that the end result won't be like mine.  Keep your fingers crossed." By the end of February, they got married. Kay wrote to Tom again on Feb 13th, 1942 alerting him to the engagement. She wrote,

"Jeepers! Creepers! How things do happen- while I was away to Salt Lake for a mere four days- I come back to find Iyo is engaged to be married and already planning on a day for the wedding- Wow!-- We sort of expected it- but just the same things like this always take us by surprise...They've set the day for Feb. 27th with Rev. Tsukamoto officiating (for sentimental reasons on the part of Min, who had said at one time that if he ever got married he wanted him to do it- you can imaging, Mom got made at first since she wanted Iy to be married by Rev. Tanaka- but all is well now) only the two families and very few close friends will attend. I wondered about it all for ahile, since he's 4 yrs her junio but since they've decided I'm all for it...I think you'll like him- he's a Pharmacist- very boyish but I guess mature- Iy has become very girlish these days- so you can imagine how old I must seem...It'll be tough for Iy, if he ever has to go to the Army- you see he has no father and the mother is quite old. Originally form S. F.- never came to Campus since he want to Cal Pharmany direct from S.F. J.C.= he's very nice looking, not so tall and skinny..."

Kay wrote to John in March updating him about the wedding as well as the loyalty questionnaire which created a "crisis" in the camp. As for Iyo's wedding, Kay expressed amazement that Sus stepped up the task of preparing the wedding reception.

"Neech really tried to be helpful and fixed things as best he could. He took it upon himself to order the turkey and pay fori t etc. And gave her $20, the day they both went out to get their license at Filmore so they could shop things they needed in Delta. He worked hard fixing the church up and at the reception- Keech just sat but Neech ran around trying to make everybody comfortable. I guess he can come thru when he wants to. The wedding was at 8- very homey with just two families and few very close friends at Rec#22- as you know the front part is partitioned off by a monks cloth curtain about half way down the barrack- we used the front part for the ceremony and the back half we fixed for a small preception set for 35 people. Chiz did most of the shopping for it and Masa Obata helped us fix salad etc. and hot biscuits with turkey etc. The ceremony was nice with candles and all- flowers were ordered from Salt Lake- just orchid and butonaires with two mothers corsages."

Min and Iyo remained incarcerated in Topaz until they got leave clearance to move to Chicago for a job.
