1943 6 4 Letter from Kay to Folks
Description
Kay arrives in Philadelphia. It is cosmopolitan, like SF, lots of Nisei. Nobody notices when groups of six JA's go to the movies. She stays with Trudy King (Quaker) at the Emlens estate house for two days. Kay appreciates the greenery. She works with 8 nisei's, and is the only full-time permanent hired. They received many offers of places to stay. International Institute gave them a 2 room apartment for $5/week. Humid Heat Climate. Trip update to meet Tom for graduation in Lincoln. Travelled to St. Louis. Suito's family in poor living conditions. Describes St. Louis: friends, "colored section, hostile."
Kay talks about sharing bed with Nobu, leaving St Louis for Chicago, spending day with John sight-seeing around town, and eating "China-meshi" but not in China-town "because there are too many others congregated." (fear of congregating with Japanese/oriental in large numbers). Kay left Chicago for Philadelphia. Says Chicago is a terrible place; "just too many Yabos..."
Kay's made new friends in Philadelphia. Invites Tomi to visit her and recommends a Sukiyaki restaurant.
